You know that moment when you catch yourself tearing up just a little bit to an advert and you think, “my god I need to sleep”. Well this year’s competition for most heart-warming advert is still in contention, with a late entry from the BBC. This Christmas Advert is called “The Supporting Act” and yes, will probably make you cry.
The BBC’s Christmas Advert this year revolves around a father-daughter dynamic in which the father is always working, and tends to neglect his overtly outgoing and performing daughter. With a message of not putting your work ahead of your family, the ad resonates with those of us who have to work hard and don’t see our families as much as we’d like. This advert channels that through a child’s eyes and proves that Christmas is the best time to have this conversation.
The animation shows a young girl practising for her Christmas talent show, and she continues to do so throughout the advert, though her father seems to show little interest as he is wrapped up in work. It makes for a bit of a heart wrenching moment when the girl realises that her dad isn’t taking much notice all of her hard work in practising for the Christmas talent show.
Eventually the father realises that work is not all there is to this holiday and decides to attend his daughter’s Christmas talent show, only to find that when she gets on stage she freezes and is too nervous to perform. Cue her dad stepping in and lovingly showing her the dance moves she has been practicing so religiously. The advert ends with the dad and daughter dancing with each other, proving he has been caring all the time and that he can still see Christmas as a magical thing as well.
