For many years, Crocs have become rather a running joke. But as with every ugly shoe – UGG have collaborated with Liberty and Christopher Kane, after all – there can be a resurgence.
So it was, that on the 10-year anniversary of Christopher Kane’s first catwalk show, he did something drastic: he reintroduced the Croc.
Incorporating his signature cut and sew methods into this collection, Kane also looked back on his 10-year career in his newest SS17 line.
The theme of his SS17 collection was ‘Make do and Mend’ and referred to a clash in culture both rural and urban. Now I know what you may be thinking: Christopher Kane has clearly lost it…who would pair evening dresses, beautiful printed tops, knitwear and tulle skirts with Crocs? But as has become the case with Christopher Kane, his gamble just works. Suffice to say that we will definitely be seeing people wearing Christopher Kane x Crocs in street style photos in the coming year.
The Crocs seen on the runway were jazzed up with coloured mineral stones, appliques and floral decorations, though the actual design of the Crocs stayed the same. Paired with skirts with incredible prints on them, Kane kept things minimal to a point in order to let the natural prints and cut of the collection speak for itself.
This collection harks back to his first MA collection in which Kane bought cheap stocking materials from Ridley Road Market to work with: this latest line retains the ethos that you don’t need expensive or luxurious fabrics in order to create a beautiful collection. This is the beauty of Kane: to be able to question the very ethos of what defines ‘Luxury Fashion’ or even ‘High End Fashion.’
Unsurprisingly, the new Christopher Kane collection took social media by storm, proving the young designer’s credentials as a modern fashion powerhouse.
With Kane’s combination of floral prints, reused and re-envisioned prints, it’s easy to see why this collection works – even with Crocs at its heart. Dare we say that Christopher Kane may even instigate the same kind of renaissance in Crocs as Vetements has done in Juicy Couture.
One thing is certain: Kane’s SS17 collection is a catwalk to be proud of, it perfectly encapsulating Kane’s position as a designer and true visionary.
