With autumn hastily approaching and the October issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine out now, we’re delighted to tell you that we’re in it! Yes, BrandAlley has a two page feature called Standout Style, which we can’t wait to tell you all about. So, over a series of three blog posts all going live at the same time, we’re inviting you behind the scenes of our fashion shoot to see what we got up to. Plus, renowned style-guru Holly Coopey, who was styling the shoot, has agreed to share insider secrets and all-important style tips on the three hot AW15 trends we photographed – Monastic, Boho and Boyish.
Before we talk to Holly…
As you know, fashion is our identity. It’s the perfect canvas for individuality, showing others who we are without us uttering a word. It’s been thought that seven seconds is all it takes to make that important first impression. Which is why we set out in our Stand Out Styles shoot to give you the style confidence to explore different of-the-moment trends, so you too can leave a long-lasting, good first impression.
By using identical twins, we created two versions of each trend with a unique twist. We wanted to show you, that whatever the weather or frame of mind you’re in, you can play with your styling to suit your mood.
As with all shoots, we arrived at the crack of dawn. The location of choice – the quirky warehouse conversion J J Studios in East London.
With hair and make-up well underway, we caught up with Holly, who shares her invaluable advice on ‘Monastic White’ styling and how to dress up or down an elemental white gown.
Over to you, Holly…
“Inspired by the religious clergy, we have seen the fashion world pay homage to the Monastic style for decades. With designers such as John-Paul Gaultier and Karl Lagerfeld turning their backs on super-short hemlines in favour of draping untailored shift dresses and ecclesiastical fashions, here’s how I’d put my twist on this distinctive style.
The Monastic look is created by simple draping – it’s quite covered up. It’s all about shape, silhouettes and shadows tied together by layering.
By using different textures of luxe silks and cashmere, plus different shades of white, you can sculpt the perfect Monastic look. For those of you who aren’t ready to take on the full style overhaul, don’t be put off. The trend can be developed in so many ways. By styling a simple silk slip with Converse sneakers, we create a comfortable, effortlessly cool vibe. Monastic style really is a lot more wearable than you might initially think.
I like showing people how to layer items over glamorous evening gowns. The one I used in this line-up is effectively a silk evening dress under a blouse. To give the ensemble a bit of edge and to rebel against the religious inspiration, I have thrown boots and stilettoes by Christian Louboutin into the mix.
If you’re fashion-brave, belt a trench and wear it as a dress. If that’s too risky for you, add simple lace lingerie underneath. There is a massive trend for sleeveless jackets and oversized coats that you can belt at the moment. Alternatively, there are a lot of wrap dresses out there. This is an ideal trend to take into the work place. Don’t be scared of wearing white. Pair a cream silk shirt with white denim – the different textures allow the colours to clash in the correct way.
If you feel like lowering your hemline in favour of the ethereal yet powerful look, try layering up this autumn with luxe fabrics in 50 shades of white.”
