For most of us, Christmas is a time to eat, drink and be merry; a time for festive parties, gift giving and spending time with loved ones. Yet while the holiday season is a great excuse to celebrate and treat ourselves, it also offers the perfect opportunity to give back and help those less fortunate.
If you are looking to share some festive cheer and goodwill this December and on into 2019, we have some great ideas on what you can do to help others…
Volunteer to Support Refugees
Donating your time can be a valuable way to give back this time of year. While there are many worthwhile causes to support, refugees seeking asylum are particularly at risk over the Christmas period. By working with Refugee Action, you will help people without food, shelter or belongings feel part of a community again.
Donate to Food Banks
With all the delicious treats available this festive season, it can be easy to forget that many people will go hungry this Christmas. By donating to food banks supported by the Trussell Trust, you can help vulnerable people have a healthy, well-balanced meal this winter.
Visit the Elderly
Christmas is a time to spend with friends and family but sadly there are many elderly people who will spend this festive season alone. Organisations like Contact the Elderly help unite volunteers with older, vulnerable people looking for companionship over the Christmas period.
Help the Homeless
During the cold winter months, the drop in temperature can be particularly dangerous for 320,000 people in the UK sleeping rough. By supporting organisations like Crisis, you can help someone find a warm bed, good company and a hot meal this Christmas.
Offer an Ear
Christmas can be a difficult time for many people. For those without family and friends, Christmas can be a very isolating experience. Organisations like the Samaritans are there to offer a safe space for anyone in need. By helping as a listening volunteer, answering phone calls or responding to emails, you could really make a difference to someone’s Christmas.
