15 minutes with…Lara Bohinc
Slovenian jeweller, Lara Bohinc has gained a worldwide following with her unique creations and distinctive designs. But what makes her tick? Read on as we delve into her underlying mathematical influences and daily creative process.
How would you describe Lara Bohinc to someone new to the brand?
Modern yet timeless. Bold yet light. Graphic yet feminine.
What influences your designs the most?
Most of the time I design pieces that I would like to wear. I am influenced by art and architecture, mathematics and sometimes nature.
What is your design process like?
It varies to be honest. Sometimes I just start with a very simple idea. For example, I’ll consider how to make a 3D shape, such as a sphere, out of a 2D shape like a circle. It’s almost like a mathematical puzzle. Or I start with a shape like a swirl, a globe, a cube, and play with them. Other times I start with a design problem: how can I make a large piece inexpensively? The process is never boring!
What’s a typical day like in your studio?
First, I always check my emails and structure my day. I write everything down and I plan my tasks in detail. Then I start designing or developing creative ideas – designing takes 80% of my time. I’ll grab a quick lunch at around 1pm and leave the office at around 6.30pm to put my daughter to bed and on my way home I often have a lengthy phone conversation with my business partner, Ernst. By 8.30pm I am back at my computer checking more emails, having a fresh look at designs I made during the day and doing further adjustments.
Do ideas for some pieces come more easily than others?
Luckily ideas come easily to me. As long as I sit at my desk and work, the ideas will come. I love designing everything and anything, and I love a new challenge.
What’s your favourite piece that you’ve designed so far?
That’s too hard, it’d be like choosing your favourite child!
How did it feel to be honoured with an MBE in 2012?
It was a big surprise! Of course, I felt very happy about it but the best thing was seeing my parents so proud.
What’a your proudest achievement so far?
I feel like I haven’t achieved enough yet, which I guess is what drives me forward. Perhaps that moment will never come?
If you pursued any other career, what would it be?
I would be an architect or an artist.
