All you need to know before going to Royal Ascot

With Royal Ascot starting today, now is the time to get set for the most glamorous event of the social season. Don’t miss out on a champagne breakfast or an opportunity to wear your best designer shoes.

To get the low-down, we’ve invited one of our fave bloggers, Tine, from mummyinthecity to share her top tips for everyone attending the fabulously British Royal Ascot.

Size matters

When it comes to choosing a suitable hat or headpiece, this is your chance to go big. In the Royal Enclosure, ladies have to wear hats, or a headpiece with a 10cm base, and fascinators are not permitted. Dare to go for a wide-brimmed, glamorous hat that would feel too big for a wedding or other social event. Don’t be afraid to opt for something highly impractical with a brim too wide to fit through a standard doorway!

Pack a picnic

There’s no need to stop for breakfast on the way to Royal Ascot. Bring it with you instead. The most stylish way to start the day is by hosting a fabulous picnic party next to your 4×4 in the car park. Bring bubbles, homemade dishes, foldable tables and chairs. You’ll feel like a pro when you see all the other picnic parties taking place in the car park on the field!

Go high

If it’s raining, it might seem like a bad idea to put on your best heels, as you could be walking across muddy fields. But think again. This is not the time to be practical. I managed to turn up in the Royal Enclosure in black Hunter wellies one year after listening to a tip on the radio in the car on the way there. This ended up being a complete fiasco, and thinking about the embarrassment of being the only one in wellies still makes me cringe. Heels are a must!
