Fashion Rules exhibition at Kensington Palace
A glamorous exhibition called Fashion Rules has just opened at Kensington Palace, celebrating retro, royal style – through the wardrobes of three royal women in their fashion heyday. Showcasing rare and beautiful dresses from HM Queen Elizabeth II in the ‘50s, Princess Margaret in the ‘60s and ‘70s and Diana, Princess of Wales in the ‘80s, this elegant dress display explores how royalty reflected the style and trends of the day, negotiating the rules of dressing fashionably within the rules of a royal wardrobe.
Summer Exhibition 2013
Well worth a visit is the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy. Incredibly, this annual event is in its 245th year and is still one of the best-loved highlights of the arts calendar. It’s the perfect opportunity to see what’s going on in the contemporary art world, with more than 1,000 works on display in all styles and media – from painting and photography to sculptures and film. And if you’d like to splash out on an original, you can – because most of the works on view are available to buy.
IncrEdibles at Kew Gardens
Treat the family to a day out at Kew Gardens to discover the weird and wonderful world of IncrEdible edible plants from around the globe. For example, you could row a fruit-shaped boat around Pineapple Island; pick up a ‘snack pack’ and find the plant that each snack comes from; visit the Rose Garden Tea Party to see beautiful plants growing out of plates, cups and teapots, plus lots, lots more.
Vintage Fairs around the UK
All year round, there are fabulous vintage fairs happening up and down the UK, which you’ll find on a really useful website called UK Vintage Fairs, which has a really comprehensive list. Today’s gems include the Lovely and Vintage Wedding Fayre at Alverbank Country Hotel in Hampshire, jam-packed with inspiration for your big day, including fashion shows, makeovers and all sorts of vintage, traditional and handmade suppliers. Very helpfully, UK Vintage Fairs also links through to events’ websites, including the one for Lovely and Vintage Wedding Fayre. where you’ll find all the details you need.
