The average person in the UK spends a third of their life in bed so it’s no wonder many of us want to invest in the right bedding. But when it comes to different thread counts, which one is best?
Typically the higher the thread count, the better quality the bedding, but it often comes down to personal preference. If you’re not sure which level is right for you, read our handy guide on how to choose the right linen to ensure you have a fantastic sleep night after night.
What does thread count mean?
Thread count is a way of measuring the number of threads per square inch of fabric. It’s a good indicator as to how soft and luxurious the material is, though lower thread count linen can also be excellent quality.
Another factor that affects this is the yarn and weave of the fabric. If you prefer a silky smooth finish look for bedding in a sateen weave or for a crisp finish choose percale.
How do I choose the right thread count?
This is ultimately down to personal choice. A lower thread count is light and airy to touch so if you prefer a lighter feel, opt for 200-300 thread count bedding. This is particularly good during the warm summer months. Opt for cotton and kit out your bedroom with matching pillowcases and sheets.
For the colder months, we recommend choosing a higher thread count. 600 is a fantastic medium compromise, offering a soft, smooth finish but anything up to 1600 will be a true luxury. Many hotel rooms furnish their beds with anything from 400 to 1000 so don’t be afraid to ask if you find a finish you like.
We love the crisp, fresh feel of white linens but that’s not to say that colourful bedding is a no go – quite the opposite! Luckily, there are many options to choose from and finding the right shade to match your decor is key.
What material is right for me?
While Egyptian cotton is undoubtedly ultra-soft and silky (think Egyptian towels), linen or pure cotton can feel just as sumptuous. As long as the materials have long fibres for supreme softness, you’ll achieve that hotel feel. Look for a cotton mix, as this has good moisture-wicking properties.
