Christy
Christy, the textile brand with a 170-year history, began in 1850 when Henry Christy returned to Britain from Turkey with a collection of unique fabrics, including a fluffy, looped cloth. Fascinated by its softness, Henry’s brother Richard and employee Samuel Holt developed a machine to make the Turkish towelling fabric on an industrial scale. They set up shop at Fairfield mill in Manchester and quickly introduced their soft, absorbent towels to the market.
By the 1851 Great Exhibition, Christy’s towels caught the attention of Queen Victoria, and by the 1890s, W.M. Christy & Sons was booming, with 30,000 spindles producing cotton yarns. Christy continued its royal connections, providing souvenir towels for the Coronation of King George VI in 1937 and gifting a special towel to Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
In 1988, Christy became the official towel supplier for The Wimbledon Championships. The brand continues to do so to this day.
