Alexander McQueen
One of Britain’s most famous fashion designers, Alexander McQueen’s name has become synonymous with glamorous grunge. His seminal designs changed the landscape of fashion and introduced an element of escapism into the industry.
After studying at Central Saint Martins in London, McQueen worked for Givenchy and overhauled it into a label of its time, winning British Designer of the Year in 1996, 1997 and 2001.
After this prized tenure at Givenchy, French house Gucci made a stake in his eponymous label and McQueen left to pursue this route.
His dramatic couture designs made waves in the fashion world, and lead to diffusion lines aimed at the general public. Tartan, skulls and bones, towering high heels and uncanny make-up all characterised the designer’s work.
Discovered at his graduation show by Isabella Blow, McQueen rose from student to internationally famous designer with a universal fan base. His sharp tailoring and Gothic overtones proved popular with fashion-lovers on the street to Kate Moss and friends.
With a rock ‘n’ roll sensibility, dark denim, golden skulls and burnished hardware, McQueen made dark romanticism covetable and in fashion.
