Born in Mill Valley, California in 1978, the first Banana Republic store opened opposite the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It began as a place in which people who loved to travel and go away on safaris could buy expedition wear.

The two founders were explorers themselves who loved to travel, and bring their collections and ideas from abroad back home to channel into their brand. Today, this pedigree of appealing to our inner “journeymen” remains strong.

Acquired by Gap in 1983, Banana Republic was brought to a greater audience. Today, it is a global clothing and accessories brand delivering versatile contemporary classics with firm roots in faraway travels and exploration.
