3.1 Phillip Lim

The designer was born in 1973 in Thailand, to Chinese parents. When he was a baby, his family emigrated to the United States. Once overseas, Lim’s mother worked 18-hour days as a seamstress while his father lived life as a professional poker player.

Along with his business partner Wen Zhou, Lim launched his eponymous label in 2005. Zhou had seen his designs and recognised his talent, and had sent him a plane ticket to New York to join her for a meeting. Within a day, the pair had decided to launch 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Focusing on unique, tailored and androgynous pieces, Lim’s brand is a favourite among both fashion editors and fans, especially in accessories, of which the Pashli satchel is particularly popular.

In 2013, Lim’s company achieved the CFDA Award for Accessories Designer of the Year, beating Alexander Wang to the prestigious prize. Today, Lim is at the helm of a fabulously-successful brand that its customers come back to again and again.
